Hi! I am Jenn. Welcome to my blog! I have created this little corner to share with you my adventures in photography, cooking, and crafting, among other things.

My Florida Vacation – October 2011

February 2nd, 2012

It had been 10 years since I had been on a plane until my boyfriend and I boarded one back in October to embark on our very first long distance trip together! Our friends (and hosts for the week!! thank you, Mike & Sara!) met us at the Tampa airport and after a short car ride to New Port Richy, it was vacation relaxation time! We spent the week playing it by ear, sight-seeing, and enjoying cocktails. I didn’t take my camera everywhere because of one reason or another, but I was able to get a few shots that I’m excited to share with you (a little later *wink*).

I got to see a whole lot of the area!! We visited the Sponge Capitol of the World, Tarpon Springs. I was pretty bummed I didn’t bring my camera there! All the sea sponge-draped boats were quite a sight to see!! The shops had sponges for sale that were still damp. I got my hands on some very awesome, sweet-smelling goats milk soap that had a sea sponge stuck right in the bar, and I was content.

The following day, we went to the Tampa Bay Aquarium! You bet I brought my camera this time. The Tampa Bay Aquarium is in an area or near an area called Channelside where huge cruise ships come to port (and where Wet Willies is located – a daiquiri bar! I took Sara’s advice when we dropped in for a frosty cold adult beverage and ordered the mudslide flavored combo. It. was. delicious.)

The outside of the aquarium was very impressive. Inside I got to see sting rays, gators, otters, ducks, turtles, sharks!, jelly fish! and a whole lot more. I got to touch a starfish and a sting ray! I was surprised to find that sting rays are silky to the touch. One of the sting rays in the touching tank was very playful, and he kept skimming up the side. Too cute. My boyfriend starred down a shark! And we met a very bold pink bird of some kind – if you know what he is from the photograph, fill me in!

When we left the aquarium, the sun was setting and the sky was a beautiful, shocking pink. I had to stop and get out my camera. I’m glad I did because it ended up being my favorite shot from the trip – it totally epitomizes the whole experience!

Sight-seeing also included: a day at Universal Studios’ Islands of Adventure (where we visited the wonderful world of Harry Potter!!! something I’ve wanted to do since the day I found out they were creating it! Tried butter beer – the frozen is delicious!) followed by the night spent at the original Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights (they turned the whole park into a haunted playground), taking advantage of the shorter lines for rides like The Mummy & The Simpsons before crashing in a hotel in Orlando for the night; a visit to St. Petersburg and the Salvador Dali Museum (another dream come true); an evening out in Ybor City; two delicious trips to two different Tijuana Flats locations (after my first visit, I was all for going one more time before returning to a Tijuana Flats-less world); my first encounters with both a Sanrio store and a Lush shop; and the most fabulous dinner (no lie!!) at the beautiful Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City!

None of this would have been possible without my sweet boyfriend and our generous friends. I’m so very lucky. I’m pretty sure my boyfriend and I make the best travel companions ever. Traveling with him was the most stress-free experience – even though the whole thing got off to a rocky start with a delayed-til-morning flight out of Syracuse because the pilot forgot to bring to work the documentation he’s required to show before… doing his job of flying a plane!! By the end of the trip, that whole experience was a distant memory.

Hehehehe you should have seen my boyfriend chase around that little lizard! It didn’t take him too long to gain a brief passenger. These guys were everywhere! I sought them out whenever we went outside because they were such a novelty to me.

Until next time! Be well. <3

On My Own Time – Everson Museum, Syracuse, NY

October 3rd, 2011

Earlier this year, I caught wind of my company’s participation in the On My Own Time project through the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, N.Y. Because I can’t describe the project in any more an eloquent way than the the website mycnyarts.org can:

“On My Own Time was initiated in 1974 by the Cultural Resources Council in cooperation with the Everson Museum of Art to help local businesses identify, celebrate and promote creativity among their employees.  Over the years the program has uncovered thousands of artists, creating countless rewards for the employees and their sponsoring companies. This unique program is a recipient of the Private Sector Initiative Commendation awarded by The President of the United States.

On My Own Time’s popularity and success has spread across the country, to cities where it has been replicated, name and all. On My Own Time is a program that makes artistic talents that might otherwise go unnoticed visible. It recognizes a most precious gift – creativity.”

I don’t know what possessed me, but I decided I was going to submit something. The day of the deadline I went to a local craft store, found a suitable frame, stopped at yet another store for the print, framed it in the car, and headed over to the main campus to hand it in! It wouldn’t be me if it wasn’t last minute!!  I thought it would be good for me, to force me to show off some of my work, to work through some fear around doing things of that nature.

Long story short, it turns out I won with the voters at my work place (which included clients and employees!) and one of my photos is hanging in the Everson Museum of Art as I type this!! It will be on display until October 16, 2011, in fact! I went to the opening reception last week and was so fortunate to be accompanied by my closest loved ones. Here’s a cell phone pic by Sarah of me standing by my photograph. It’s hung wrong. I made a rookie mistake by not indicating on the back which way was up!

So if you can make it down to the Everson, do so. If not to check out my photograph, to donate some cash to a great place that allows art to thrive. And here’s how the photograph is supposed to be oriented:

Until next time, be well!

Summer Photo Adventure – Sandy Hook, NJ

September 23rd, 2011

This summer my awesome friend Sarah decided she was going to take me to see the ocean for the very first time in my life! She picked a place at random. Somewhere close enough to make it a 1 day road trip adventure – Sandy Hook, NJ. Naturally, we brought our cameras along. She was also able to get her hands on a VW  Beetle convertible for the weekend! Riding down to the NJ coastline with the top down was extremely fun! I’d never been in a convertible before (I’ve lived a somewhat sheltered life, I guess! haha). We rocked out to music and had an awesome time navigating the Garden State Parkway. Road trips with Sarah are always a great time. We always manage to make the best out of everything – though aside from getting a little lost looking for a Chick-fil-a after a long day of sight-seeing – there wasn’t anything bad to make the best out of anyway!

I went to my very first beach store, had an amazing lunch by the water, saw and photographed the oldest lighthouse in the country, and touched a dead jellyfish!! After taking in the Atlantic ocean and putting my feet in the water, we ended up at a seaside bar where a wedding reception was about to start. Sarah and I couldn’t help but want to check out the cake and colors (we’re wedding photographers, we just can’t help ourselves!). Sarah was able to snap a photo and when we were about to leave, we ended up running into the bride and groom. Come to find out they just moved out of Baldwinsville! What a small world. We chatted for a little bit and hopefully made some new friends!

Anyway, it was a pretty cool weekend, and I’m a pretty lucky girl to have a friend like Sarah. Here are some of my favorite shots!!

I thought I’d jump right in without any sort of explanation or introduction of myself for my very first blog post – I’ve been putting it off for way too long! But now that I’ve finally figured it all out – this is just the beginning! I hope you come back regularly to check out what I’m working on. I won’t just be posting photographs! I plan on working on some writing projects, getting some staple weekly posts established, and sharing recipes and craft projects with you! Yay!

Until next time, be well!!
